NBC News Delayed Russert Announcement

NBC News waited almost 15 minutes to report the death of its colleague Tim Russert, mostly because his wife and son are on vacation in Italy.

The NY Times reported the story on their website at 3:23 PM ET. NBC didn't break in to make the announcement until 3:39 PM.

NBC sources tell us they delayed because they could not reach his family overseas. They were on the trip to celebrate his son Luke's graduation.

Veteran NBC anchor Tom Brokaw -- a close friend of Russert's -- made the announcement.

Madonna opens heart about her "painful" struggle to adopt

MadonnaPop superstar Madonna yesterday opened her heart about her "painful" struggle to adopt Malawian tot David Banda -- comparing it to natural childbirth.

The singer -- who celebrates her 50th birthday later this year -- talked openly about her and husband Guy Ritchie's controversial battle to adopt the two-year-old.

She says, "It was painful and a big struggle and I didnt understand it.

"In the end I rationalized that when a woman goes through natural childbirth, she suffers an enormous amount.

"I went through my own kind of birthing pains dealing with the press on my doorstep, accusing me of kidnapping or whatever.

But I had to go through some kind of process and in the end it made me stronger so I cant complain."

The 'Material Girl' singer also blasted reports that David was adopted without his fathers consent -- and that his mother had not really died of Aids.

She said, "Yes his mother did die of Aids and yes, I met his father and he absolutely agreed to the adoption.

"There is nothing controversial about the adoption. It is just theres a lot of bureaucracy and administration. This adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi."

She said she now sees herself as the role model for future adoptions in the country.

Madonna was speaking at a press conference about her new documentary I Am Because We Are which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The film, featuring David, paints a stark picture of life in Malawi and shows kids orphaned by Aids.

Six arrested in follow up to OiNK raid

Six people alleged to be former users of the OiNK file sharing website have been arrested "in relation to uploading pre-release music", it has emerged.

The individuals were arrested then released on bail by Cleveland police at the end of last month. They have been asked in interview for their OiNK login details and about links to Alan Ellis, who ran the site, according to reports.

Ellis, from Middlesbrough, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and copyright infringement when the site was closed down by police in October. He has not been charged and remains on police bail.

Membership of OiNK, a BitTorrent tracker which specialised in high quality music, was by invite only. It is thought to have been targeted because of its focus on pre-release music.

Record industry association the BPI said this week: "The illegal online distribution of music, particularly pre-release, is hugely damaging, and as OiNK was the biggest source for pre-releases at the time we moved to shut it down."

John Hurt - Hurt Stunned By Spielberg Offer

Veteran British actor JOHN HURT was stunned to be offered a part in INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL - because he thought a call from STEVEN SPIELBERG was a hoax.

The 68-year-old stars alongside Harrison Ford in the latest installment of the adventure franchise - but feared he had upset Spielberg by asking to look over the script before he made his decision.

He recalls, "When I got the call from Steven Spielberg I almost said, 'Yeah, pull the other one!'.

"Then I thought, 'Hang on, I recognise that voice. It really is him!' He asked me if I'd like to come and do the film and I insisted on seeing the script.

"I was told later that nobody asks to see the script when Spielberg calls, you just say 'Yes.'

"They had to send a courier over from Los Angeles, who delivered the script at three in the afternoon, collected it at eight in the evening, stayed the night in a hotel and flew back to Los Angeles. It was a very expensive read."

"Iron Man" a superhero hit at the box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comic book adventure "Iron Man" proved its mettle at the North America box office and topped expectations, kicking off the summer movie season with estimated weekend ticket sales of $100.75 million and marking a commercial rebound for its star, Robert Downey Jr.

The tally far exceeded expectations of an opening in the $70 million to $80 million range for the three-day period beginning Friday. All told, the film produced by Marvel Studios grossed $104.25 million, counting receipts from Thursday evening previews, according to studio figures issued on Sunday.

"Iron Man's" U.S.-Canadian haul fell just shy of the $114.8 million grossed by "Spider-Man" -- perhaps the most famous Marvel superhero of all -- in the first weekend of May 2002. That tally stands as the biggest domestic opening ever for a non-sequel film.

"Spider-Man 3" still holds the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time -- $151 million in the first weekend of May 2007.

Distributed through Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures, the film is the first self-financed production from Marvel Studios, a division of Marvel Entertainment Inc. Costing about $150 million to make and $75 million to market, the film is being closely watched as the first major release of the summer movie season.

"It's the perfect way to start the new studio, to blast it off," Marvel Studios Chairman David Maisel told Reuters. "We're fortunate to have this powerful Marvel brand which means something for moviegoers around the world."

FROM PLAYBOY TO SUPERHERO

Drawing largely favorable reviews, "Iron Man" stars Downey, 43, as billionaire industrialist and playboy Tony Stark, who wrestles with a mid-life crisis as he invents a high-tech suit of armor that transforms him into a superhero.
